A BASE jumper was rescued by helicopter on Sunday after experiencing problems with his parachute that caused him to drop about 300 feet onto a ledge near Updraft Arch on state Route 128. Robert Scheler, 46, of Leawood, Kan. told rescuers that his parachute failed to open properly, slamming him into the side of a rock wall before he hit the ground at a speed of 20-30 miles per hour. Scheler suffered a compound fracture to his lower left leg. Members of the Grand County Search and Rescue team, along with emergency medical personnel and law enforcement officers from the county and the National Park Service were called to the scene at about 7:27 a.m., according to a news release from the Grand County Sheriff’s Department. Rescuers located Scheler on a ledge about 350 feet above the canyon floor and began to hike to him, but determined that helicopter evacuation would be the best option, due to the challenges in navigating the treacherous terrain in the area. Scheler was hoisted in a rescue basket into a helicopter, stabilized, and flown to Salt Lake City for treatment. Photo by Curt Brewer
